I’ve already booked you an emergency appointment with my Marcello. The man’s a genius, like Edward Scissorhands but on acid. In the mean time ….*wraps scarf around head*
Things I remember
- Fighting with my cousin over the Easter egg hunt because we thought the eggs in the red wrappers tasted slightly better than the others.
- Requesting that everyone turn their backs and look the other way when I auditioned to be the lead singer of the school band.
- How hard it was to swallow the mouthful of spaghetti after my Mum told me that my father had terminal cancer.
- Telling my school principal that if she paid more attention to the financial and social matters rather than trivial things such as wrongly wearing the uniform, our school would be a lot more reputable.
- Winning my senior grand final after my last day of high school and being asked by my coach if I’d consider coming back next year to be his assistant.
- Finally agreeing to come to one of my mother’s tennis matches, and falling asleep in the first ten minutes.
- Watching my best friend drunkenly try to play the saxaphone whilst wearing a German storm trooper helmet and deciding that I couldn’t be more proud of her.
- My sister and I versing each other in an extremely violent game of ‘no fouls’ basketball and laughing over our dislocated fingers and bleedings noses.
- My mother standing over my hospital bed telling me she was sorry that she wasn’t enough to keep me alive.
- My father telling us over dinner one night, that when he first came to Australia, he sat down infront of ‘No Standing’ signs. He then proceeded to yell at the mess we made as my sister, mother and I choked on our food in laughter.
- The smell of the rain as my father’s coffin was lowered into the ground.
- Sitting on the roof at sunrise with my cousin, wrapped in the jacket that I stole from the first boy I’d ever slept with.
- Recoiling the first time I heard someone call me their girlfriend.
- My 5th grade teacher addressing me as ‘The Writer’ and promising I’d write some great things one day.
- Deciding that the first people I was going to tell about my father were my uni friends, who’d I’d only known for a few weeks, and realizing it was a good decision.
- Picking up a guitar when I was 12 and sitting there for three hours, trying to teach myself how to play.
